With the objective of evaluating the current situation and perspectives of Health Surveillance within the National Health Service, a workshop took place during the TV Brazilian Epidemiology Congress. Experts in this area were present in the workshop supported by the National Epidemiology Center (CENEPI). Given the restructuring of the assistancial model of the National Health System, potential problems were discussed. Strategic proposals were elaborated in order to strengthen the intersectorial characteristics of health promotion, as well as the redefinition of the epidemiologic surveillance practices at the state and municipal level, emphasizing VIGISUS principles.
