Abstract

OBJECTIVE: to describe the spatial distribution and epidemiological characteristics of tuberculosis (TB) cases in the urban area of the city of Santa Cruz do Sul-RS. METHODS: a descriptive cross-sectional study, including data from patients diagnosed from 2000 to 2010. Data sources were the medical records of referral center for TB treatment of Santa Cruz do Sul and of the reportable disease database - Sinan. RESULTS: A total of 321 (63.7%) cases were evaluated and of these, 267 (83.1%) were located spatially. We observed a high proportion of cases in the South region. The frequency of TB/HIV coinfection was 9.7%. The average cure rate during the study period was 72.0%. CONCLUSION: the male was predominant and the average age was 40.7 years. The spatial distribution of cases was concentrated in southern urban area, where the socioeconomic status is lower.
