BARBOSA, Andréa Maria Ferreira; FERREIRA, Luiz Oscar Cardoso y BARROS, Maria Dilma de Alencar. Homicide and living conditions in the city of Recife, State of Pernambuco, Brazil. Epidemiol. Serv. Saúde [online]. 2011, vol.20, n.2, pp.141-150. ISSN 1679-4974. http://dx.doi.org/10.5123/S1679-49742011000200003.
OBJECTIVE:the study analyzed the differences in homicide mortality among residents according to living conditions and neighborhood in Recife, from 2004 to 2006. METHODOLOGY: an exploratory ecological study of groups based on census data; the cumulative mortality rate from homicide for that period was calculated for the whole city and considering living conditions and neighborhood. RESULTS: the analysis showed a cumulative mortality rate of 2033/100,000 inhabitants in Recife and a higher risk of death by homicide for residents of stratum IV (harshest living conditions); some neighborhoods in stratum I and stratum II (superior living conditions) showed higher mortality rates as compared to the city as a whole; comparing stratum I with stratum IV, the relative risk was 2.9. CONCLUSION: inequality in city planning is translated by huge differences in the observed rates, which show that the risk of homicides is not homogeneous and affects mainly poor areas.
