CAMPANARIO, Paulo y MAIA, Paulo Borlina. Correction and adjustment method for mortality with updated life table model for Brazil. Epidemiol. Serv. Saúde [online]. 2004, vol.13, n.3, pp.147-174. ISSN 1679-4974. http://dx.doi.org/10.5123/S1679-49742004000300003.
The objective of this study was to generate a system or model of life tables, updated and specific for Brazil, to obtain mortality data by sex and age for the micro-regions and municipal districts with incomplete civil registration. The model was built from variables that are highly correlated with the infant mortality in the micro-regions. An individual index, similar to the Human Development Index (HDI) used by the United Nations‘s (UN), was created for each microregion; the average of these indexes represents a general index, which has a high correlation with infant mortalty. The ordering of these micro-regions based on their respective indexes permitted 40 macro-regions with at least one million inhabitants to be created. This is the statistical basis for the present model that was created. The application of this model, using infant mortality information estimated by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics Foundation (IBGE), was satisfactory. Besides infant mortality, the model might be applied to other data, such as census data on orphanhood, widowhood, etc.
