OBJECTIVE: to describe deaths from work-related accidents and violence in Palmas-TO, Brazil, 2010-2011 and to verify the applicability of verbal autopsy for improving the quality of information on such deaths. METHODS: descriptive case series study of deaths from work-related accidents and violence in workers aged 18 or over using Mortality Information System (SIM) data and investigation through verbal autopsy. RESULTS: 14 of the 74 deaths investigated related to work. 4 of them were typical accidents, 5 resulted from commuting injuries, 2 could not be classified and 3 resulted from work-related violence. Fatal injuries at work were 100% underreported on the SIM. CONCLUSION: work-related deaths were not identified on death certificates and verbal autopsy proved to be instrumental in enhancing information about such deaths on the SIM.
