Brazilian National Health Information Systems have showed an improvement of the quality of data over time and a large amount of information is now available. However, there is still a need to introduce quality control techniques. The National Birth Information System (SINASC) is used as an example for the introduction of quality control techniques. Two techniques are proposed, one for areas with high coverage and another for areas with problems in capturing events (low coverage). In the latter areas, the comparison between the number of births captured by the SINASC and the number of hospital deliveries informed by the National Hospital Information System (SIH-SUS) is proposed and data of the state of Piaui is used. It was observed that in 10 out of 15 micro-areas of the state, less than 10% of the births were notified by SINASC when compared with hospital deliveries informed by the SIH-SUS. In areas with high coverage of events, like the state of Rio Grande do Sul, the use of a technique similar to the chart control, in which the monthly average number of births ± 1.96 standard deviations is estimated (expected number) and compared with the monthly number of births notified by SINASC, is proposed. Of a total of 35 micro-areas analyzed, 13 showed a number of births below the estimated inferior limit while two, were above the superior limit. The use of these techniques is proposed to identify areas with problems in capturing events.
