Characterization of victims of traffic accidents attended by the Mobile Emergency Service in João Pessoa-PB in 2010. Epidemiol. Serv. Saúde [online]. 2012, vol.21, n.4, pp.589-600. ISSN 1679-4974. http://dx.doi.org/10.5123/S1679-49742012000400008.
OBJECTIVE: to characterize the victims of traffic accidents and investigate the spatial distribution of these events. METHODS: ecological study of all victims of traffic accidents treated by the Mobile Emergency Services (SAMU), in João Pessoa, 2010. Data were collected on medical records of SAMU. RESULTS: 4,514 victims were treated, most males (75.45%), aged between 20 and 39 years (60.0%). The most common vehicle was motorcycle (63.0%), members were the most frequently affected body region (62.5%). The spatial analysis identified the city center with a relative risk (RR) ten times greater than the RR of the municipality. CONCLUSION: SAMU data was considered a source of information to identify high-risk areas of traffic accidents and most the exposed groups, which are fundamental information for planning emergency response in the city.
