OBJECTIVE: to analyze maternal mortality temporal evolution and intra-urban differentials in Aracaju, 2000-2010. METHODS: ecological study using data from Mortality and Live Births (LB) Information Systems as well as Municipal Maternal Mortality Prevention Committee data. The annual maternal mortality rate (MMR/100,000 LB) was calculated and analyzed by socioeconomic strata. RESULTS: Maternal mortality showed no statistically significant trend (p=0.35). Among maternal deaths having recorded information, the majority were brown women (50.6%), unmarried (43.7%), with up to seven years of schooling (64.5%) and due to direct obstetric causes (72.4%). MMR (83.3/100,000) increased with age and was 1.9 times higher in areas of lower socioeconomic status than in areas of intermediate status (p=0.021). CONCLUSIONS: Aracajú's high maternal mortality rate, with higher risk in low socioeconomic strata, indicates the need to improve antenatal and delivery care quality for pregnant women living in poorer areas.
