MALVEIRA, Salma Saráty et al. Very low birth weigth in general hospital. Rev. Para. Med. [online]. 2006, vol.20, n.1, pp.41-46. ISSN 0101-5907.
OBJECTIVE: To analyze the frequency of very low weight newborn, the most common associated complications, lethality rate and the major cause of obit in this population. METHOD: observational prospective study during the period from January 1st to June 30th, 2003. All of them had birth weight d” 1.500g, according to Centers for Disease Control on USA, with admissions at the unit neonatla of Fundação Santa Casa de Misericórdia do Pará Hospital. RESULTS: within the population studied, 200 were very low weight, witch corresponded to 14,3% from all new born inmates, in the same period. Of these, 50,5% were male and there was statistically significant association between the very low weight at birth and the realization of pre-birth medical assistance, with the absence of assistance in 81,5% of cases. The mean time of internment was 19 days. The most common affections were: infection (86%), pulmonary hemorrhage (71,5%), hipoglycohaemia (10%), arterial channel persistence (4%) and peri-ventricular hemorrhage (1,5%). Within 200 new bornes, 121 went to obit, being 53,7% males. The majority had as the main cause of death the hospital infection. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that the prevention of very low weight at birth must be one of the priorities in the prebirth assistance, because it´s surely one of the most significant aspects on childhood mortality.
