OBJECTIVE: study the relationship between antenatal care and the occurrency of congenital syphilis. METHODS: the research was done at Fundação Santa Casa de Misericórdia do Pará by epidemiologic analisis of mothers that had newborns with congenital syphilis in the period of january to august of 1999. RESULTS: maternal syphilis diagnosis coming from congenital syphilis was done in 46 cases. In 58.7% of mothers who had syphilis in the pregnancy realized complete antenatal care, and in 19.6% the prenatal was done but incomplete; only 21,7% of the mothers did not realized antenatal care. And only in 5 mothers the VDRL was repeated more than one time. CONCLUSION: it is necessary to improve antenatal care to prevent congenital syphilis.
