LIMA, Rafael Rodrigues; COSTA, Ana Maria Rabelo; SOUZA, Renata Duarte de  y  GOMES-LEAL, Walace. Secondary neurodegeneration and excitotoxicity. Rev. Para. Med. [online]. 2007, vol.21, n.1, pp.27-31. ISSN 0101-5907.

OBJECTIVE: Review the main experimental evidences for a role of excitotoxic events on the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative diseases. METHODS: Literature review through bibliographical search in the databases PUBMED/ MEDLINE. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: The tissue damage occurring following ischemic and/or traumatic injuries in the central system nervous is not due the primary pathological events, but also, and more importantly, to the secondary neurodegeneration involving excitotoxicity, inflammation, oxidative stress, apoptosis. The understanding of t he molecular mechanisms of these events is necessary for the more effective development of neuroprotective and neuroregenerative therapies for CNS diseases.

Palabras clave : neurodegeneration; excitotoxicity; glutamate; cell death.
