Abstract

OBJECTIVE: analyze the profile of the Research Ethics Committee in the Universidade da Amazônia (CEPUNAMA). METHOD: analysis of scientific material, such as legislation regulating the actions of research agencies was realized. Evaluation of all submitted projects to CEP-UNAMA, from 2003 to 2005, were proceeded. RESULTS: UNAMA was the institution which presented the highest number of projects (75.98%) and researchers (88.88%). The main area of the knowledge had been to the area of the health (50%), followed by human science area (47.05%). As for the final decision of the CEP-UNAMA, were obtained 161 approved projects (78.92%), 35 approved with corrections (17.15%) and 8 rejected (3.93%). The Centro de Ciências Biológicas e da Saúde (CCBS-UNAMA) was the unit with the largest participation in projects (67.30%). In relation to the maximum degree of the researchers: 85 (41.67%) were specialists, 59 (28.92%) were doctors, 52 (25.49%) were masters and 8 (3.92%) researchers were only graduated. CONCLUSION: the CEP-UNAMA has had fundamental importance in the increment of the scientific research activities, playing an important role to the regional development.
