Abstract

ALMEIDA, Marina Negrão Frota de; SIQUEIRA, Tércia de Oliveira  and  RIBEIRO, Suelly Maria Mendes. Evaluation of the occlusion in pre-dental period in premature born in Santa Casa de Misericórdia do Pará. Rev. Para. Med. [online]. 2007, vol.21, n.4, pp.31-36. ISSN 0101-5907.

OBJECTIVE: this study aims to analyze different types of occlusion found in predental period in preterm infants born at Santa Casa de Misericórdia do Pará and to compare them to the standard type found in full-term babies. METHODS: 50 one-month-old exclusively breastfed premature babies of both sexes and all ethnic groups, without visible anomalies, were selected. The proposal of Simpson & Cheung (1973) was used for morphology and gingival rim type classification. Data was collected by means of questionnaires and clinical examination. RESULTS: the most prevalent type was both overbite and overjet rim ("D"), followed by overbite rim ("E"). End-to-end rim ("B") appeared in 18% of present cases. Anterior open bite ("A") and overjet ("C") did not appear in any case reported during the study. CONCLUSION: the morphologic pattern of preterm infants' gingival rim was not statistically different from that of full-term babies.

Keywords : Gingival rim; predental period; preterm.
