Abstract

SOUSA, José Fabrício Pinheiro de et al. Acute appendicitis: ultrasonographic aspects. Rev. Para. Med. [online]. 2007, vol.21, n.4, pp.59-61. ISSN 0101-5907.

OBJECTIVE: demonstrate through ultrasound images the aspects of acute appendicitis in patients with abdominal pain, especially in the right lower abdomen. METHOD: analysis of several ultrasound images of patients with acute appendicitis. CONCLUSION: ultrasonography has shown to be a reliable method in the evaluation of patients with appendicitis, mainly due to its high levels of sensibility and specificity. However, as all diagnostic methods, it presents some limitations, being the most relevant ones the gaseous strain of regional intestinal loops; atypical organ localization; important local pain; experience of the examiner; and, finally, obesity.

Keywords : acute appendicitis; ultrasonography; diagnosis.
