OBJECTIVE: bibliographical research focusing main aspects related to Helicobacter pylori pathogenesis. METHOD: the data for this review were obtained from PUBMED, SCIELO and MEDLINE searches of the terms H. pylori, gastritis, peptic ulcer and gastric adenocarcinoma. Only papers published between 1985 and 2007 were considered. FINAL COMMENTS: the microganism infection is characterized by the chronicity, and the knowledge of its pathogenesis and risk factors is an important prevention mechanism.
