OBJECTIVE: identify the factors that influence on difficulties that adolescent mothers signed at the exclusive breastfeeding support program (PROAME) at "Fundação Santa Casa de Misericórdia do Pará" have to breastfeed their children. METHOD: a transversal study was made with 151 adolescent mothers participating of the Program, interviewed between September and December of 2005. Emphasis was on difficulties on breastfeeding and the elements associated to those difficulties. Chi-Square was used to test statistical significance at á=0,05 level. RESULTS: 41,7% of the mothers reported difficulties on breastfeeding. CONCLUSION: the number of children of the mother was a determining factor to overcome such difficulties. Age, number of medical examinations during pregnancy, level of education and information sources about breastfeeding did not have influence on the difficulties that mothers had when breastfeeding their children.
