Brazil ranks tenth of 22 countries that are responsible for 80% cases of tuberculosis in the world. The incidence in 1997 was 51,7 / 100.0000 , there were about 6.000 deaths. In 1997 was reported 83.309 cases ( from the estimated 129.000 cases ). At present 75% of reported cases are cured, 14 % lack of aderence to treatment. In October 1998, the Ministry of Health present the NTP where adopted the WHO strategy DOTS with the implementation the all Tb control policy package. The targets of NTP are:to implement the new Tb control strategies to 100% administrative areas in the country; to detect 92% of existing cases by 2002; to cure 85% of detected new cases ; to halve the incidence of the disiase and reduce the mortality to 1/3 by 2007. The Ministry of Health will pay a bonus ( R$150 or R$100 if there was or not supervision in the treatment ) to health centres for each patient cured. Preliminary results are obteined in services of health that adopted the supervision of treatment
