As a national reference laboratory we have received cultures from the majority of the laboratories that isolates nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) and must identify or confirm prior identification. The aim of this study was to analyse data obtained with the cultures sent to the national laboratory isolated from 1994 to 1999 concerning geographic region, specimen, and HIV infection. The 590 cultures were identified according classical biochemical methods and genetic probes. We observed the preponderant isolation of M.avium-intracellulare (44,4%) followed by M. kansasii e M. fortuitum. Patients with mycobacterial disease suspicion from south and southeast regions have contributed with 57,6% of the total. Within 431 patients , 106 of them have mycobacterial diseases, pulmonary disease was the most frequent (60,3%) among them. We suppose that the high isolation taxa in south and southeast regions would be correlated with available laboratorial network and high prevalence of tuberculosis, allowing thus the isolation of NTM as well. Not excluding the possibility of having high prevalence of mycobacteriosis in those regions mainly with association with AIDS. The information is very important for characterization of these diseases and a expressive percent of identified cultures did not mention clinical presentation either HIV infection . Another pathogenic species recently decribed abroad have not already identified by our laboratory.
