Abstract

HIJJAR, Miguel Aiub; OLIVEIRA, Maria José Procopio Ribeiro de  and  TEIXEIRA, Gilmário M.. A tuberculose no Brasil e no mundo. Bol. Pneumol. Sanit. [online]. 2001, vol.9, n.2, pp.9-16. ISSN 0103-460X.

The authors analyze the global and brazilian estimations made by the World Health Organization (WHO) on tuberculosis incidence, mortality, multiple drug resistance and HIV-TB association. They also comment on the recent data. The figures used for the analysis, may they be estimations (8,7 millions of new cases globally and 116,000 in Brazil) or based on real findings, (82,249 new cases in 2002, in Brazil), indicate a severe Public Health situation, mainly in developing countries, and show the necessity of energetic and effective measures for its control. In a country of high incidence, like ours, the case finding activities, associated to biosafety measures, are of interest for all health professionals, specially those who work in hospitals or in emergency rooms

Keywords : tuberculosis; epidemiology.
