KUSANO, Maria do Socorro Evangelista; SOUSA, Silvia Teresa Reis  e  ASSIS, Maria Cândida Mota de. Tendência da morbi-mortalidade por tuberculose no Distrito Federal - Brasil. Bol. Pneumol. Sanit. [online]. 2002, vol.10, n.1, pp.55-60. ISSN 0103-460X.

With the world exacerbation of tuberculosis due to deficiencies in the health controlling programs, to the increase of incidence of AIDS and to concomitant appearance of drug resistance bacili, as well as to the socioeconomic difficulties produced by international crisis, to evaluation of the behavior of tuberculosis in the population with the purpose of improving the actual controlling measures became mandatory. In this paper, through a descriptive study of tuberculosis cases, based on compulsory notification, the authors analyse the morbidity and mortality due to tuberculosis in the Federal District (Brazil), between 1978 and 1997, taking into consideration sex, age, and the clinical manifestation of the disease. Thirteen thousand and fifty five tuberculose patients enrolled in the Tuberculosis Program (PCT-DF) were studied between January and March 1998, were studied. The correlation coefficient of ordens or places (Spearman) and the Student test to evaluate the tendency of the disease was employed . The indicators of morbidity and mortality of the Federal District present high levels when compared to the developed regions. The incidence of tuberculosis in these 20 years has significativelly decreased (r=0,78; p<0,05) as well as its mortality (r=0,89; p<0,05). It was observed a higher incidence of the disease in older male patients. The results obtained show that tuberculosis in the Federal District is considered a light to moderate problem. However, there is a tendency of fall in the morbidity and mortality epidemiologic indicators, and it is necessary to associate other variables to observe if this reduction is related to factors such as operacional problems or epidemiologic improviment or both
