The World Health Organization (WHO) considers tuberculosis to represent a global emergency. During the last few years, the incidence of tuberculosis has been around 50/100,000 inhabitants in Brazil, whilst in Bahia province, it was 60/100,000 in 1999. In Salvador, it is twice this value - 122,7/100,000 - suggesting an urgent need to enhance tuberculosis control activities. Amongst those with a higher risk of developing disease are the prision population where the inmates experience conditions likely to enhance spread of disease such as overcrowding and lack of hygiene. In addition, there is the growing number of HIV infected prisioners, what contributes to the increase in tuberculosis cases. At present there are no tuberculosis control measures in these institutions and health professionals who work there are under higher risk and it is therefore proposed to propose implementation of tuberculosis control activities in the prisions in Salvador
