During 1999, the district of Mendes, Rio de Janeiro, reported a prevalence of tuberculosis equivalent to that from the whole State of Rio de Janeiro (97/100000 inhabitants). In this study, we evaluate a tuberculosis control programme (TCP) introduced in Mendes during January 2001. For the analysis, data was extracted from from SINAN, PNI, SIM, and from the specific registration data of PCT; interviews were undertaken with users. The main results were:1) identification of 98,8% of the estimated number of symptomatic patients with pulmonary tuberculosis; 2) direct smear examination was performed in 100% of the cases of pulmonary tuberculosis; 3) compared to the results for 1999, there was an 88,8% increase in the cure rate and reduction of 72,7% in the defaulter´s rate. In addition there was an improvement in the quality of the registration of data and in the care given. To ensure the effectiveness of the tuberculosis control activities in Mendes, it is important to: 1) decentralize activities; 2) find at least 90% of the expected cases; 3) cure at least 90% of the cases and 4) undertake continuous supervision of the work done
