This exploratory - descriptive study aimed to describe the socio-neconomic profile of the multiresistent pulmonary tuberculosis patients hospitalized at a Municipal Hospital in Rio de Janeiro. Main objectives were to evaluate what multiresistent pulmonary tuberculosis patient knows about his own disease and its ways of transmission; if the patient follows the directions fixed by the commission of Hospital infection control, and, in case they do not, to know the reasons why. The study took place between april, 2002 and january, 2003 and it was developed by means of qualitativy approach. The data analysed by thematic subject matter made possible to the conclude that the patients do not have a reasonable knowledge about their disease, transmission mechanisms and prevention. The authors conclude that, in order to prevent multiresistent pulmonary tuberculosis.it is necessary to make tuberculosis patients to understand about their disease and its transmission.
