Abstract

WADY, Maria Thereza B et al. Investigação dos aspectos nutricionais em homens abrigados em uma instituição filantrópica envolvida em surto de tuberculose. Bol. Pneumol. Sanit. [online]. 2004, vol.12, n.1, pp.13-18. ISSN 0103-460X.

Janeiro. Around 160 ex-homeless subjects were inhabiting the center at the time of the outbreak, age range 20 to 74 years old. Pulmonary tuberculosis was diagnosed in five subjects after tests were carried out in all inmates. Evaluation of nutritional and laboratorial aspects was done in all subjects. The results of the dietetic analysis of these subjects showed increased energy and a lack of essential micronutrients intake. The nutritional assessment, in different compartments, showed increased fat mass and decreased protein mass in the majority of the individuals. We observed diminishing of blood hemoglobin level in subjects with tuberculosis. These lower levels of hemoglobin appear to be associated to the presence of intestinal parasites (ancylostomiasis, amebiasis, giardiasis and ascariasis) diagnosed in 40% of subjects. Some nutritional aspects, such as micronutrient intake deficit, appear to be important in the development of tuberculosis.

Keywords : tuberculosis; homeless; nutritional assessment; hemoglobin; intestinal parasites.
