Abstract

NOGUEIRA, Jordana de Almeida et al. Implantação da estratégia DOTS no controle da tuberculose em Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo (1998-2004). Bol. Pneumol. Sanit. [online]. 2006, vol.14, n.3, pp.141-144. ISSN 0103-460X.

OBJECTIVE: Describe the treatment results (cure, abandonment and death) in the periods before and after the implantation of the DOTS strategy for tuberculosis (TB) control in Ribeirão Preto - SP. METHODOLOGY: descriptive study that used secondary information sources (EPI-TB, TB Control Record Book). RESULTS: DOTS has been implanted from 1998 onwards. In that year, supervised treatment (ST) covered 20.3%, expanding to 73.8% in 2004. Between 1998 and 2004, cure rates increased by 1% per year, abandonment levels fell by 1.84% per year and mortality rose by 0.09% (per year). CONCLUSION: Since the implantation of DOTS in Ribeirão Preto, the work has been reorganized by means of: the constitution of a team responsible for the Tuberculosis Control Program (TCP) in each Health District; the realization of ST at the patient's home and at the Health Unit; the introduction of registration instruments and the computer system EPI-TB. Challenges refer to the sustainability of the strategy in terms of the government's commitment to the transparent use of financial resources for TB, the continuity of the TCP coordinator's position and the technical and management training of health teams at the peripheral and district levels of the city's health system.
