A description and analysis of qualitative and quantitative aspects of the Tuberculosis Control Program (TCP) in 38 cities of Goiás during 2003-2005. The main problems detected included insuffi cient decentralization of the program (in only 15,8% of the cities); limited use of bacteriology; (it was available within the public health system (SUS) in only 13,6% of the cities); incomplete data registered (47,0% of the cities); low percentage of respiratory symptoms recorded (34,1%); directly observed treatment (DOTS) was not regularly used; low percentage health workers trained on TB control activities in the past 3 years (13,2%); insuffi cient numbers of therapeutic regimens supervised (57,9%). Overall the results demonstrate the need for further intervention in the health system in order to ensure adequate disease control.
