Descriptive study focusing on defaulters among tuberculosis patients treated at the reference health units in Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil from 2000 to 2003. Data was collected from the National System for the Registration of Diseases of the Municipal Secretary for Public Health and from domiciliary interviews. Of the total of 541 cases notifi ed during the period, 195 cases were evaluated. 78.4% cured, 8.2% changed address, 4.6% died, 3.5% changed diagnosis and 5.1% (10) abandoned their treatment. These ten cases included two persons convicted of crimes but of unknown localization, two tramps, three persons who left the municipality, with no forwarding addresses, one addict, alcoholic and HIV positive - parking attendant; one housewife with tuberculosis meningitis, abdominal pain, headache and apathy.. Both fi - nished three months of treatment and use public transport. One case is a convict, with tuberculosis meningitis, 4 months of treatment and HIV positive, a smoker, needing police escort for treatment. The cases localized and interviewed in 2002, using the questionnaire, claimed adequate alimentation during the treatment period. Individuals with a predisposition to abandon treatment were identifi ed: 3.4% abandoned treatment in 2003, below the established acceptable level, i.e., 5% for the national program. The study permitted the monitoring and improvement of the epidemiological system, and also the fi ow of information and the organization of health services.
