ln this study, the application of the indicator Potential Years of Life Lost (PYLL) is demonstrated in the analysis of transformations in the death causes framework in Santa Catarina, from 1980 and 1995. Method of direct standardization was employed to allow estimating, for the groups of studied causes, the number of deaths and PYLL expected for the year 1995 in case this population would be exposed to death probabilities verified in 1980. Thus, the Standardized Reasons for Death (SRD) and for PYLL (RPYLL) would be obtained. Marked drop was observed in the mortality and PYLL rates caused by Non-communicable diseases and Communicable diseases, Maternal and Perinatal, exception made for the 20 - to - 49 - year age strata which exhibited relative increase in this group, probably due to the appearance of AIDS. External deaths causes had an inversion of its drop trend. Another indicator used was the ratio between deaths due Noncommunicable and Communicable, Maternal and Perinatal, as a synthetizing measure of transformations in the causes structure, proposed as an approximate indicator of the epidemiological transition. Results found were compared to those of other regions around the world.
