Abstract

PEIXOTO, Heloisa Côrtes Gallotti  and  SOUZA, Maria de Lourdes de. Anos potenciais de vida perdidos e os padrões de mortalidade por sexo em Santa Catarina, 1995. Inf. Epidemiol. Sus [online]. 1999, vol.8, n.2, pp.47-52. ISSN 0104-1673.  http://dx.doi.org/10.5123/S0104-16731999000200006.

This study analyzes the differences in the mortality profile according to gender and death causes, in Santa Catarina, during the year of 1995, using the PYLL indicator. The magnitude of the indicator for men is 1.91 times greater than for women (IC = 1.87-1.95). External Causes" are mainly responsible for the observed differences, considering the greater weight this group has in male mortality. Also to be noticed is the excessive male death due to chronic liver disease and cirrhosis of the liver, with a premature death risk almost 7 times greater than that observed among women. This excess of male deaths can be seen even at early ages, when factors other than the biological ones, have not a significant role. The group of "malignant neoplasias", the fourth cause of PYLL among men, moves to the second position among women, probably due to the fact that the main neoplasia locations in this gender (breast and uterus cervix) seem to happen at younger ages.
