MELO, Vânia Oliveira; SOARES, Darli Antônio e ANDRADE, Selma Maffei de. An evaluation of tuberculosis control program in Londrina-PR during 1996. Inf. Epidemiol. Sus [online]. 1999, vol.8, n.4, pp.53-62. ISSN 0104-1673. http://dx.doi.org/10.5123/S0104-16731999000400004.
The effectiveness of the tuberculosis control program was studied in Londrina, Paraná State, Brazil, in 1996. Registered new cases of tuberculosis residents in Londrina (N=186) were selected. These patients had their medical records evaluated at the Sanitary Pneumology Sector or at the service that informed the case, after 10 months following diagnosis. The Aids Information System was also used to evaluate notification of tuberculosis as an opportunistic disease. Results have shown that the majority of tuberculosis diagnosis was made in hospitals (67.4%) with subsequent hospitalization, suggesting that patients may be in advanced stage of the disease. In the 10th month after diagnosis, it has been observed that 65.1% of patients were cured, 17.7% abandoned treatment, 11.8% had not been enrolled in the Program and 4.8% died. The proportion of close contacts that attended the service for chest x-ray was only 53.9%. The Aids Information System demonstrated that 16 cases of tuberculosis had not been notified. Results suggest that there is a need to take measures that aim the improvement of tuberculosis control actions.
