This paper describes the immune-preventable diseases, which in spite of presenting different epidemiologic characteristics, have vaccination as their main way of control. Measles, poliomyelitis, diphtheria, whooping cough, tetanus (accidental and neonatal) and human rabies were considered. Information was obtained from the Hospital Information System - SIH (admittances) and from the National Center of Epidemiology - CENEPI (case reports). Information on morbidity was obtained by using the diagnosis or accomplished procedure, due to the characteristics of the database or of the pathology. Some particularities for whooping cough (age group of the admittance) and for human rabies (motive of discharge) were also considered. Among the various results, outstanding findings such as the identification of the measles epidemic in 1997 and 1998; the coherence for admittance data by age group for whooping cough, besides the strong underreporting of accidental tetanus cases and the low number of admittances for neonatal tetanus were detected. It is concluded that SIH/SUS, in spite of some limitations, presents a great potentiality as a complementary system for surveillance and monitoring of Notifiable Diseases, being agile for the identification of epidemics and showing coherence with the historical series pattern provided by CENEPI. This study generated suggestions for the improvement of SIH/SUS and its use as a complementary system for epidemiologic surveillance, useful for CENEPI and the Health Assistance Secretariat of the Ministry of Health - SAS/MS.
