MATTOS, Inês E.. External causes of morbidity in children aged 0-12 years: an analysis of medical records at an emergency hospital in Rio de Janeiro. Inf. Epidemiol. Sus [online]. 2001, vol.10, n.4, pp.189-198. ISSN 0104-1673. http://dx.doi.org/10.5123/S0104-16732001000400005.
A descriptive study was conducted of the medical records of children aged 0-12 years treated at an emergency hospital in Rio de Janeiro for an external cause of morbidity during the months of May and October, 1995. The records were analyzed according to demographic variables (sex, age) and others related to the cause of injury, time elapsed between the accident and medical attention and type of lesion(s). A high proportion of those receiving medical attention were male (57.4%; p<0.01), and there was a predominance of children aged 5-9 years (26.8%). Falls were the principal external cause of morbidity in all age groups (47.7% of all analyzed records). Some data indicated the possibility of child-abuse.
