Epidemiologic profile of malaria in the State of Pará in 1999, based on a ten year historical analysis (1989-1999). Inf. Epidemiol. Sus [online]. 2002, vol.11, n.2, pp.69-77. Malaria is seen today in the world context, as a serious public health problem. It affects mainly developing countries with tropical and sub-tropical climate, where environmental conditions favor the development of the disease vectors. This study aims to describe the epidemiological pattern of malaria in the State of Pará, based on a 10-year historical analysis (1989 - 1998). A progressive increase in the number of cases of malaria was observed throughout these years. From 1993 the State of Pará was responsible for the highest number of cases of malaria in the Amazon region. The evaluation of the state’s endemic level regarding 1999 considering records of cases in previous years, revealed the occurrence of an epidemic from June to December. Taking the present study into account, we may state that malaria is not only a public health problem but it is also political, social and economic. As a mean to control malaria, a set of integrated actions involving effective and responsible participation of both Government and society should be considered.
