SUMMARY Community participation is crucial to prevent and control dengue. A large epidemic of classical dengue occurred in Belo Horizonte during the first quarter of 1998. Approximately 87,000 cases were reported, one of the highest incidence rates among large Brazilian cities. A community participation project entitled "Adopt a block" was one of the intervention measures undertaken by municipal health authorities, among others. Its main objective was to stimulate residents of a given street block to participate in the fight against the vector of dengue and other relevant health problems, together with local health units. A survey was carried out to assess the degree of participation and possible results related to the resolution of locally identified problems. Interviews were conducted in a probability sample of 324 participants. Results indicated that 93% of the participants classified the project as good or very good and 38% had participated in the solution of problems identified in their area of residence. The degree of resolution was considered good (91%). In this paper we discuss the implementation of this project which created institutional mechanisms for an active community participation in dengue control activities.
