Abstract
MONTEIRO, Mário Francisco Giani. Burden of disease associated with selected causes of hospital admission in the National Unified Health System (SUS). Epidemiol. Serv. Saúde [online]. 2004, vol.13, n.1, pp.7-14. ISSN 1679-4974. http://dx.doi.org/10.5123/S1679-49742004000100002.
The objective of this paper is to design an indicator which estimates the burden of disease associated with hospital admissions in the National Unified Health System (SUS). The burden of hospital admissions was estimated, measured by years lost because of disability (API), and years of potential life lost (YLL) in consequence of premature mortality, to compose the disability-adjusted life years (DALY), in a similar way to that proposed by Murray. In this experimental stage, some diseases that have lead to hospital admissions have been selected - for example, pulmonary tuberculosis, selected neoplasms, diabetes and acute myocardial infarction - in productive age groups (15 to 64 years of age). The source of data for hospital morbidity was the Hospital Information System of the National Unified Health System (SIH-SUS); and for mortality data, the Mortality Information System (SIM) of the Brazilian Ministry of Health.
