Treatment of bacilliferous pulmonary tuberculosis in Cuiabá, Mato Grosso State, Brazil (1998-2000): spatial distribution. Epidemiol. Serv. Saúde [online]. 2004, vol.13, n.3, pp.175-184. The objective of this study is to evaluate the spatial distribution of patients who abandoned treatment for pulmonary tuberculosis (TB). A historical cohort study was performed with the analysis of 481 bacilliferous patients with confirmed TB, registered in the Program of Tuberculosis Control (PCT) in the municipality of Cuiabá, Mato Grosso State, during the period of 1998 to 2000. Data were obtained from the PCT program registry book and medical records. The density of incidence was calculated and other statistical analyses were utilized (Mantel-Haenszel) with a pvalue< 0.05. The results showed an incidence of 5.1 courses of treatment abandoned per 100 individuals-month, with a greater frequency occurring between the second and the third month of treatment. Increasing incidences of abandonment were observed per 100 individuals-month, compared to the reference group of the Western Sanitary District (DS Western = 4.0; Eastern = 4.1: Northern = 7.2; Southern = 7.5), with greater abandonment in the DS Northern and Southern (p<0.001). In conclusion, the incidence of abandoning treatment of TB is high, and the Northern and Southern sanitary districts were responsible for the greatest incidences of abandonment. The same districts are characterized by a precarious socio-economical situation and lower coverage per treatment units.
