As an inductive action of the Brazilian Ministry of Health, the National Scientific Article Contest tried to identify and disseminate results of health research that could enhance the National Response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Launched in December, 2003, 52 papers were registered by 2^nd February, 2004 in the following research fields: monitoring of HIV infection and risk behaviors; and evaluation of services, programs and technologies directed to the prevention, assistance or surveillance of HIV/AIDS. Among the 52 articles submitted, 45 (87%) had a woman as the first author, 72% were graduates of nursing, medicine or psychology, 81% were working in health services, 48% with some specialization, 58% residing in a State capital (33% in the Southeast, 29% in the Northeast and 25% in Southern regions of the Country). The papers were submitted anonymously for a structured evaluation by two ad hoc specialists. Based on the final evaluation, 15 articles were accepted by both specialists, out of which seven were selected, with 100% of the main authors being women, 58% nurses or phisicians, 86% having Master’s or Ph.D. degree (vs. 42% in overall participation), 72% coming from the university and 57% residing in the Southeast region or a State capital.
