MARTIN, Gilberto Berguio; CORDONI JUNIOR, Luiz e BASTOS, Yara Gerber Lima. Demographic aspects of ageing process in a brazilian southern city. Epidemiol. Serv. Saude [online]. 2005, vol.14, n.3, pp.85-90. ISSN 1679-4974. http://dx.doi.org/10.5123/S1679-49742005000300003.
This study analyses the demographic evolution of the population of the Municipality of Londrina, Paraná State, Brazil, in the aging process. The general population was studied over the period from 1970 to 2000 by gender and age, using population census data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics Foundation (IBGE). Ratios of aging and dependency were calculated, the latter ratio divided into youngest (age 0-15 years) and retirees (age 60+). The outcomes indicate: a strong migratory process due to a rural exodus (decline in rural population from 52.07% to 3%); smaller family size rates, and Increase in the number of female heads-of-family; changes in age distribution, with proportional growth of retired (from 4.03% to 9.34% during the period); aging ratio increase (from 0.10 to 0.35); and fall in the total dependency ratio due to the ratio for the youngest category and increase of the oldest, which demonstrating a relevant socioeconomic impact.
