Aspects concerning the quality of mortality information in the elderly population resident in the Municipality of Maringá, Paraná State, Brazil, from 1979 to 1998. Epidemiol. Serv. Saude [online]. 2005, vol.14, n.3, pp.159-169. ISSN 1679-4974. http://dx.doi.org/10.5123/S1679-49742005000300004.
The study analyzes the quality of mortality information for the elderly population, by ill-defined causes and place of occurrence of death, for the Municipality of Maringá, Paraná State, Brazil, from 1979 to 1998. Data were obtained from the Mortality Information System of the Brazilian Ministry of Health (SIM-MS), National Demographic Census, realized by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics Foundation (IBGE), and Population Study Department of the University of Campinas (Nepo/Unicamp). During the study period, proportional mortality by ill-defined causes decreased 5.7%, and the mortality rate also decreased for ages less than 79 years old. Between 1996-1998, except for ages 85 and over, the mortality rates were higher for men and increased for more advanced ages. For this time period, the mortality rate for the 60-64 year old age-group and over 85 were, respectively, 114.1 and 1614.4 for men, and 33.9 and 1913.9 for women (per 100.000 inhabitants). The residence was the most common place of death for men and women (63% and 75.6%, respectively). Deaths without medical attendance (38.2%) and for senility (23.5%) were the most frequent during the period. These results show good quality of death information and an increase in deaths due to senility, and death occurring in public places in Maringá-PR.
