Abstract

MALTA, Deborah Carvalho et al. Initiatives of surveillance and prevention of accidents and violence within the National Unified Health System (SUS). Epidemiol. Serv. Saúde [online]. 2007, vol.16, n.1, pp.45-55. ISSN 1679-4974.  http://dx.doi.org/10.5123/S1679-49742007000100005.

Violence has been recently included in the agenda of the Health sector, within the last two decades of the XX century, following an increase in the number of deaths and illnesses due to external causes. According to the World Health Organization, 1.6 million people die annually from individual or collective violence. This text presents the inclusion process and various initiatives of the Brazilian Ministry of Health (MS) regarding violence prevention. It also reports the organization of the National Violence Prevention and Health Promotion Network, encouraged by the MS, in order to provide technical and political basis for local projects on health promotion and violence prevention and disseminates the main deliberations of the I National Workshop of the Violence Prevention Network, held in June 2005, reinforcing the Network's structure.

Keywords : violence; accident prevention; surveillance; National Unified Health System.
