This paper analyzed the risk factors associated to hospital neonatal mortality at the maternity school hospital of the Instituto Materno-infantil Professor Fernando Figueira from 2001 to 2003. Data from birth and death certificate were used. The identification of factors associated to neonatal mortality has been done through bi-varied and multi-varied analysis. The hospital neonatal mortality rate was 49.4 per 1,000 live births. The effects of multi-varied analysis - Apgar score at the fifth minute lower than three or between four and seven, mothers with low literacy, gestational age until 36 weeks, number of antenatal care visits under three, low weight at birth, and dark skin color - resulted significantly associated with neonatal mortality. Antenatal and perinatal care should be organized to prevent some of those factors and reduce inequalities due to social differences.
