VASQUES, Ana Luiza Reis y PERES, Marco Aurélio. Time trends in colon and rectal cancer mortality in the State of Santa Catarina, Brazil between 1980 and 2006. Epidemiol. Serv. Saúde [online]. 2010, vol.19, n.2, pp.91-100. ISSN 1679-4974. http://dx.doi.org/10.5123/S1679-49742010000200002.
The aim of this study was to estimate the colon and rectal cancer (CRC) mortality time trends in the State of Santa Catarina between 1980 and 2006. Data were collected from the Brazilian Mortality Database and from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics. Prais-Winsten regression was used to calculate the annual increase or decrease in mortality rates for the State as a whole, its macro regions according to the age groups and gender. Mortality rates for CRC increased considering the State as a whole, as well as its geographic regions and adults and elderly of both genders. The highest mortality rates were observed in the capital city, Florianopolis, as well as in Planalto Serrano and Planalto Norte regions. The results showed that the higher the age the higher the mortality rate: the highest rate was found in elderly men (44.65/100,000) and the lowest rate was found in young women. The health surveillance system should be strengthened to generate information about incidence of cancer in order to allow the implementation of local policies to assure the control of the disease.
