OBJECTIVE: to know the geographic distribution of species of sandflies in areas with cutaneous leishmaniasis in the Brazilian Federal District. The study has been carried out with the objective of identifying the local fauna and a cutaneous leishmaniasis vector. METHODOLOGY: sand flies were collected with CDC traps, in a monthly basis for four consecutive nights during two years, in the Cerrado vegetation, in animal shelters and in residences. RESULTS: 17,737 specimens representing 27 species were captured: 2 species ofBrumptomyia and 25 species ofLutzomyia. Species ofmedical interest were: Lutzomyia whitmani, Lutzomyia intermedia, Lutzomyia neivai, Lutzomyia davisi, Lutzomyia flaviscutellata and Lutzomyia longipalpis. CONCLUSION: the mostfrequent species were Lutzomyia whitmani (75.9%) and Lutzomyia longipalpis (8.76%). The identification of the two other vectors species (Lutzomyia neivai and Lutzomyia davisi) helps mapping areas of Leishmanias transmission in the Federal District.
