OBJECTIVE: to evaluate some indicators of Epidemiological Surveillance (ES) after the decentralization of actions for the Family Health Team. METHODOLOGY: retrospective, longitudinal study to assess some indicators of coverage, timeliness and quality of the ES system in a city in Bahia between 2000 and 2006 using data from reports of Sinan, Management and ES. Chi square for proportions was used to examine statistical significance of variations in indicators. RESULTS: compulsory notification of diseases and epidemiological investigation (EI) have been performed by 100% of the Family Health Units, (increase of 41.7% in theperiod). The proportion of timely closing of EI and timely investigation of exanthematous diseases fell by 6.2% and 14.5%, respectively, but remained above the levelspreviously agreed. The cure rate of tuberculosis increased 24.0%. CONCLUSION: the results suggest that the Family Health Strategy will contribute to improve ES.
