OBJECTIVE: to identify perceptions and practices of Family Health Strategy professionals from a Health Region of Ceará state concerning adverse drug reaction (ADR). METHODOLOGY: cross-sectional, descriptive study. A questionnaire was applied to 123 health care professionals (physicians, nurses and dentists) from March to May 2008. RESULTS: the majority of the respondents was female, aged between 20-29years and recently graduated. Most of the respondents (65,9%) considered that the teaching about ADR during their graduation courses was insufficient and 78,9% informed trying to keep themselves updated on this issue reading The Pharmaceutical Specialties Dictionary, a publication supported by pharmaceutical companies. Only 5,7% demonstrated adequate knowledge about ADR definition as proposed by the World Health organization and adopted in Brazil. Only 39,0% informed to investigate, regularly, ADR on their patients. The report to the physician was the action informed by nurses when facing ADR, however none of them reported the case to The National or State Pharmacovigilance System. CONCLUSION: as the Family Health Strategy is a pillar of the Brazilian health system organization and it is strongly based on a new link between health professionals and the service users, it is very important do develop initiativesfor training, information and mobilization of these professionals regarding rational use of medicines, particularly pharmacovigilance.
