PAIVA, Adriana de Azevedo et al. Brazilian Vitamin A Supplementation Program in Paraiba State: an analisys from the narrative of the Family Health Program Team. Epidemiol. Serv. Saúde [online]. 2011, vol.20, n.3, pp.373-383. ISSN 1679-4974. http://dx.doi.org/10.5123/S1679-49742011000300012.
OBJECTIVE: to carry out a descriptive analysis of the National Program of Vitamin A Supplementation in Paraiba state. METHODOLOGY: interviews were carried out with 43 professionals responsible for the Program and 56 supplement appliers, in nine towns in the state. The interview form was constructed based on the ministerial policy that instituted the Program (729) and on the policy manual, the methodology of evaluation was centered in the structure-process-result. RESULTS: there were a good adherence of the families to the Program and the commitment to the Family Health Strategy Teams to capture the target-population, combining strategies such as activefinding, spontaneous demand and vaccination campaigns. The main weaknesses found were: a) the structure, lack of informative material to publicize the Program informing the target population; b) on the process, were lack of regularity, delay and insufficient supply of the supplement; lack or insufficiency of training; unawareness of the periodicity of the supplement application and inadequate filling-out of the registration form used by the Program; c) on the results, were low coverage and discontinuity in the application of the supplement. CONCLUSION: the results show the necessity of reorganizing and improving the Program in Paraiba, so that it can reach the expected impact.
