OBJECTIVE: to identify risk factors associated with diabetes Mellitus (DM) in users of a health promotion service. METHODOLOGY: cross-sectional study in individuals aged ≥20 years assisted by a health promotion program called 'Academia da Cidade', in the Municipality of Belo Horizonte, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil; data concerning sociode-mographic, health, dietary intake and anthropometric characteristics were collected; bivariate and logistic regression analyses were conducted; strength of association was measured by odds ratio (OR), according to a 95% of confidence interval (CI95%). RESULTS: data on 364 individuals were compiled; among the participants, 89.3% were women, and 74.5% adults; DM prevalence was of 15.2%; multivariate analysis showed factors associated with DM, which included hipertriglyceridemia [OR=1.33; CI95%: 1.07-1.65], abdominal obesity [high elevated: OR=2.66; CI95%: 1.21-5.83], and daily candy intake [OR=0.26; CI95%: 0.08-0.83]. CONCLUSION: coordinated actions of health services can contribute to the prevention and control of risk factors for DM, especially abdominal obesity and dyslipidemia.
