OBJECTIVE: to describe the profile of injuries victims treated at emergency department of Brazil's Unified National Health System in 2009. METHODS: a cross-sectional study was conducted. The sample included 74 emergency departments located in Distrito Federal and23 Brazilian capitals, selected by one-stage cluster sampling. The data were collected during 30 consecutive days in an alternated 12-hour shift. RESULTS: 89,9% of the cases were resultingfrom accidents. Among the victims of violence and accidents attended the selected services, men accounted for 64,2% in accidents and 71,1% in violence situations. 22.9% of the victims attended due to accidents in the age group 20-29 years, adults 20 to 29 years accountedfor 34.8% of visits because violence. CONCLUSION: the largest proportions of visits werefor victims of accidents and violence: males with low education, race / skin color brown, situations related to alcohol consumption and with the sites of occurrence residence and the street.
