MATOS, Karla Fonseca de e MARTINS, Christine Baccarat de Godoy. Epidemiological profile of mortality by external causes in children, teenagers and young people in the capital of the State of Mato Grosso, Brazil, 2009. Epidemiol. Serv. Saúde [online]. 2012, vol.21, n.1, pp.43-53. ISSN 1679-4974. http://dx.doi.org/10.5123/S1679-49742012000100005.
OBJECTIVE: describe and analyze deaths by external causes under 24 years old, in the capital of the State of Mato Grosso, Brazil. METHODS: transversal study, considering the victims residence and the local of their death in the Municipality of Cuiabá-MT, in 2009; data source were Death Declaration, and investigation processes conducted by the Death Surveillance of the Municipality. RESULTS: from 131 deaths studied, 61.1% were caused by aggression, 16.8% by transport accident and 13.0% by other accidents; the mortality coefficient by external causes was more expressive in male aged 20-24 years old (252 deaths per 100 thousand inhabitants); after the event investigation, 11.5% of causes of deaths had changed, and almost a half of them changed from 'ignored' to 'intentional' cause. CONCLUSION: the most part of the studied deaths were caused by violence; it was evidenced the importance of the Death Surveillance to improve the quality of information about the intentionality of the death cause.
