Abstract

OBJECTIVE: to estimate the use and need of dental prosthesis in individuals aged 50-74 years-old, residents in three Health Districts of the Municipality of Porto Alegre, State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, in 2008. METHODS: a cross-sectional study; data were obtained from both socio-demographic interviews and clinical exams. RESULTS: out of 720 individuals, 63.7% were using some type of upper dental prosthesis and 30.0% were using lower prosthesis; women used prosthesis in lower and upper jaw more frequently than men; individuals aged 60-74 years used prosthesis morefrequently, andfull upper prosthesis was the most used; as for income, full upper prosthesis was used more frequently by those whose income was lower than a minimum wage. CONCLUSION: there was a high prevalence of need and use of dental prosthesis in the sampled population; full dental prosthesis was more frequently used for the upper jaw, and partial ones for the lower jaw.
